As regards these old shipbuilders, perhaps the engineering firms should not be omitted entirely. It is certain that they largely co-operated. We have already mentioned Logan and Co. as being, in fact, predecessors of Jno. Riach and Co., and in 1863-64 we find it recorded that Hongkong's "Engineers" comprised two firms:
(1) James Logan, Hongkong Engine Works, Queen's Road West. Staff.—Wm. Moldowie, clerk; Samuel Thompson, boilermaker; Andrew Bruge, engineer; Andrew Miller, plumber and gas-fitter; O. Pohl, engineer; W. Stirling, moulder; James Baker, apprentice engineer.
(2) MacDougall and Co., Spring Gardens (Wanchai). Staff.—H. MacDougall, engineer; Samuel Speechly, engineer; James Henderson, engineer; James Spalding, moulder.
The Chinese gunboats built to the order of the Canton authorities by MacDonald & Co. of Wanchai, one of which was launched in June, 1867 (see 10-11-34) had boilers built by MacDougall & Co.
